What is perineoplasty?

Perineoplasty repairs or changes tissue in the perineum, the area between the vaginal opening and the anus. It may be considered for scarring or changes after childbirth, or for cosmetic concerns.

It is not the same as vaginoplasty, which involves the internal vaginal canal.

Symptoms come before a procedure.

Speak with a primary care clinician or gynaecologist about pain, scar discomfort, urinary symptoms, or a feeling of pelvic pressure. Ask whether a pelvic health specialist or pelvic floor physiotherapist would be appropriate.

A consultation should distinguish a medical problem from a cosmetic preference. “Tightening” is not a diagnosis or a guaranteed improvement in sexual function.

Recovery and risks.

Potential risks include bleeding, infection, pain, scarring, altered sensation, painful intercourse, or further surgery. Cleveland Clinic describes recovery commonly taking six to eight weeks; your own instructions depend on your procedure and health.

Discuss alternatives, future pregnancy plans, activity restrictions, and aftercare before making a decision.

What about “vaginal rejuvenation”?

This marketing term can refer to very different procedures. Ask for the exact treatment and the condition it is meant to address. We do not list laser, radiofrequency, or injectable treatments as proven ways to rejuvenate the vagina.

For a device-based treatment, ask whether the specific device is licensed by Health Canada for the proposed use, what evidence supports it, and what harms have been reported. A device licence for one use does not establish benefit for every advertised use.

Questions for specialist care.

• What tissue would the proposed surgery change?
• How will you measure whether treatment has helped?
• Who will support my recovery?
